Kenneth Bell Jr. – Director
Kenneth Bell is currently the Director of Bands at Martin Kellogg Middle School and former Marching Band Director at Newington High School. Prior to that he was director of bands at Chippens Hill Middle School in Bristol, Newington High School and Litchfield Middle/High School. His concert and jazz bands have been consistently awarded “superior” ratings at area music festivals.
Prior to beginning his teaching career, Mr. Bell spent four years as trumpet instrumentalist, percussionist and director of ceremonial bands in the US Naval Academy Band, Annapolis, MD.
Mr. Bell received degrees in music education and performance from the Hartt School of Music and the University of Connecticut. He is also a member of ASBDA (American School Band Director’s Association), CMEA (Connecticut Music Educators Association) and Phi Beta Mu National Band Director’s Fraternity.
Mr. Bell performs around the state and beyond as a professional trumpet player and enjoys working with other bands as a guest clinician and conductor.
Marc Balling – Percussion Instructor
Marc Balling has been the Elementary Music Teacher at Ruth Chaffee Elementary School since 1996, including directing Ruth Chaffee’s elementary band for the past 29 years. He was the drummer for John Wallace “Show Choir” from 1998-2019, and was the Drumline Instructor for the NHS Marching Band from 2006-2009. Mr. Balling plays drums professionally in a number of projects throughout CT.
Valerie Barrieau – Instructor
Valerie Barrieau is the director of general, choral, and instrumental music at Pearson School in Winsted, Connecticut. She previously student taught and interned at Martin Kellogg Middle School and CREC’s Academy of International Studies Elementary School, and teaches private woodwind lessons in the greater Hartford area as well.
Ms. Barrieau earned Bachelor’s Degrees in Music Education and Jazz Studies, as well as a Masters Degree in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Connecticut, where she was a member of the UConn Marching Band, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, and Symphony Orchestra.
Professionally, she is a sought after woodwind doubler, having performed in venues across the Northeast including Manchester’s Cheney Hall, Jorgensen Center, The Bushnell, Lincoln Center, and Carnegie Hall. She remains an active gigging musician all over New England.
Karen D’Angelo – Instructor
Karen D’Angelo is the director of beginning band at George Hersey Robertson Intermediate School in Coventry, CT. In her prior appointments, she taught 6-8th grade band, orchestra, and music technology at CREC Two Rivers Magnet Middle School in East Hartford, CT and began the instrumental music programs at CREC Museum Academy and CREC Reggio Magnet School of the Arts.
Ms. D’Angelo earned her Bachelor of Music Education from the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam and earned her Master of Music Education from the Hartt School. She plays alto sax with the saxophone ensemble, “Brown Paper Sax”. In 2017, she won the Capitol Symphonic Winds concerto competition on flute and continues to perform with them as an ensemble member.
Jacob Humerick – Instructor
Jacob Humerick is director of instrumental music at the Bristol Arts and Innovation Magnet School in Bristol, CT. At BAIMS, he teaches 6-12 band, along with digital music courses and beginning strings. Prior to his appointment at BAIMS, Mr. Humerick was co-director of bands at Harry M. Bailey Middle School in West Haven, CT.
Mr. Humerick received his Bachelor Degree in music education from Western Connecticut State University and Masters Degree from The American Band College of Central Washington University, where he performed with Bobby Shew, Allen Vizzutti, Doc Severinsen, The Canadian Brass, among others.
Mr. Humerick continues to perform on trumpet in the Plainville Wind Ensemble. He remains an active member of the Connecticut Music Educators Association.
Colleen Mello – Administrator
Colleen Mello is currently the director of Instrumental Music at the Emerson-Williams Elementary School in Wethersfield, CT. She teaches band and string instrument lessons and ensemble rehearsals to grades 4, 5 and 6. Prior to this position, she was the Band Director at Granby Memorial Middle School in Granby, CT for 8 years.
Miss Mello earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Music from the University of Connecticut where she participated in the UConn Marching Band and Pep Bands, as well as the UConn Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble and Orchestra. She earned her Post-Baccalaureate teaching certification from Central Connecticut State University in 2014 and her Masters Degree in Music Education from the American Band College of Central Washington University in 2022.
Miss Mello continues to perform as a clarinet player with the Plainville Wind Ensemble and currently serves as the Northern Region Middle School Festival Co-Chair alongside Mr. Bell. She is an active member of CMEA (CT Music Educators Association) and ASBDA (American School Band Directors Association).
